Austin Parker from Honeycomb kicked off Observability Day, shedding light on the latest in OpenTelemetry updates.
Here are three noteworthy developments:
- Continuous Profiling: After two years of deliberation within the OpenTelemetry community, Continuous Profiling receives the green light following the establishment of the Profiling SIG at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2022. This move enables users to delve deeper into application behavior amidst other signals, facilitating root cause analysis and performance optimization. Implementation is slated for completion this year.
- Events and RUM (Real User Monitoring): Tailored optimizations for real user monitoring.
- API/SDK Stability for Core Signals: Following the Chicago Observability Day in 2023, four more languages have been designated as stable SDKs. Golang is anticipated to join the stable lineup this year.
But the pièce de résistance: OpenTelemetry’s graduation application from CNCF sandbox this year! The community deems it mature enough for official adoption.
Various updates on observable projects like Prometheus, FluentBit, and Jaeger were also discussed.
Bryan Boreham from Grafana Labs presented updates on the Prometheus project, now a decade old with 8 releases in the past 12 months. Notably, the 1.0 version of its Java client has been rolled out, almost a complete overhaul.
Prometheus makes strides in histograms, moving from blocky resolutions to nearly infinite granularity, enhancing efficiency. While still experimental, this feature is nearing completion for eager testers.
Moreover, its size has halved compared to two years ago.
Prometheus is marching towards version 3.0, and its integration with OpenTelemetry will be discussed in detail at the main event.
Eduardo Silva (Chronosphere) discussed updates within FluentBit.
Pavol Loffay (Red Hat) and Jonah Kowall (Aiven) elaborated on Jaeger updates, primarily focusing on Jaeger V2 enhancements aligned with OpenTelemetry.
In summary, OpenTelemetry continues its rapid evolution, bolstered by increased support from observable projects, solidifying its position as the de facto standard.
